Home Office Stress Busters
Stress – it’s known as the “silent killer” and can wreak havoc on your body as well as your personal life. It’s fair to say that most of us would like to do our part to relieve stress where possible.
Here are a few ideas to help you beat stress in your home office:
1 – Breathe. Deep breathing has been proven to slow down or even stop the onset of stress. Breathing properly gets oxygen to all your cells and can slow your heart rate in a matter of minutes.
Start by taking a deep breath in through your nose (mouth closed) and letting your stomach expand as though it is a balloon filling with air. Then hold the breath for three seconds. This shouldn’t really be uncomfortable but simply give you a moment to pause. Then exhale through your mouth as you flatten your stomach.
The next time you feel stress coming on, try doing five to ten of these deep breathing exercises.
2 – Exercise. You can’t beat exercise as a stress buster. It releases pent-up energy and anxiety. Regular exercise has been proven to reduce anxiety, stress and even mild depression. It helps keep your body flexible and in good condition.
And exercise doesn’t have to mean sweating away in the gym. Do what you enjoy doing; as long as it’s done on a regular basis and gets your heart rate up slightly, it counts. Try a brisk walk around the neighborhood everyday. Or maybe you’d rather dance to music for fifteen minutes. It really doesn’t matter what you do as long as you enjoy some form of exercise regularly.
Exercise is a sure way to help you beat the stress and stay positive and focused.
3 – Take a break. Stress can take its toll at any time. If you feel yourself getting stressed and anxious, take a short break. Go outside and get some fresh air for a few minutes. Or perhaps you’d rather have a cup of tea and read for a little bit. Taking short breaks during your work hours can help keep you calm and your energy levelled throughout the day.
4 – Ditch the caffeine. It’s easy to get into the habit of drinking coffee when you’re sitting at your desk, but too much caffeine can send your stress levels through the roof.
Slow down on the caffeine consumption. You can easily replace a few cups of coffee with a nice herbal tea. If you don’t enjoy herbal teas, then black tea has less caffeine than coffee and may be just as satisfying.
Getting rid of stress isn’t always easy and life in general can be quite stressful. However, by taking a little time to look after yourself and recharge your batteries you’re on the right path to stress-free living.
